Papillon-Phalene Hair Coat Care
If your Papillon ever gets into sap from a tree, paint, burrs, clumps of mutt.....
It's best to apply cooking oil, or mineral oil to the spot; let it sit for a 1/2 day, remove by hand, whatever the problem is, and then wash out the rest.
How often to Bathe.
With today's dog shampoos, it is possible to bathe your Papillon once/per week without drying out his coat.
Remember to brush him before the bath, or all mats and tangles are going to be far worth after the bath, when the hair got wet.
Fold his ears down, so the water does not get into the ear canal. Make sure to rinse his hair out very well, and apply a bit of conditioner, for easier brushing.
Have a dog hair dryer ready. There are some small ones available which come with a stand. Place the dryer about 1 foot away, not to burn his skin, and start with a low to medium setting to get your Papi used to the blow dryer.
This is the best time to clip his soften nails. (if you know how to do that)

Papillon Hair Growth
Here are some samples of hair/ ear fringe growth of Papillons.
How long will his coat be....?
The length of the Papillons hair is developed mostly depending on his genes, but also on his food, health, environment, grooming, and, sable/red colored Papis seem to get less ear fringe.Spay and neutered dogs grow also a better hair coat.
Climate has an impact on hair growth. You can not expect the same amount of hair coat in Florida, US, as you do , if you would live in Alaska.
Look at his pedigree to evaluate the length of hair coat his parents, grandparents have.

Dog Shows
Lets talk about Dog Shows: there are numerous kennel clubs in the US, which conduct dog shows. The AKC Kennel ClubShows are not the only ones.
Take the "International Dog Shows"(http://www.iabca.com/index.html ); these shows are like a breath of fresh air. Europe is coming right to your door step; along with their European rules and guidelines. Aren't our dogs not from Europe? Why not being judged by standards from abroad. And in these shows, the dog is judged to the most part within , so, if there are 8 dogs in the ring, and they are all beautiful and show-worthy; they all win!!!
So, go to the link above, learn all about them on their web site, take your dog and let him be a winner!!Int/Multi CH Tiger Man vom Cavalierchen received his International ChampionShip in 2009.

When does a Papillon, Phalene reach adult size? Papillon - Phalene- Physical Development
- 12-16 weeks:
Your puppies motor skills and senses are well developed at this age. He is full of energy and mischief, but to relieve you, he needs still a lot of naps within between. His bladder control is also improving.
Make sure to check his bite often. His adult teeth are coming in, the puppy teeth may not always fall out, and they should.
Best: have your vet check it out.- 4-6 Months:
This is the major growth period of your Papillon. He will have lost all his puppy hair, he will look somewhat out of proportions, he is clumsy, with a short attention span...you will worry if this is the right dog you bought.
Be patient, it will be all over soon, and your puppy will grow up to be a wonderful little guy, with a lots of beauty!!
6-12 Months:
Consider him as a teenager!
His hormones are kicking in, he will still grow a little, and he wants to be very active.
It is very important to exercise him at this age. It is the period of final development.
- 9-12 Months:

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
This condition is not often seen in Papillons, but it is a genetic condition, where both parents must be carriers to produce such a puppy with PRA. It causes blindness somewhere between the ages of 4 - 8 years.

Papillon Nutrition
Dry food.
Canned food.
Homemade diet.
Any dog would love canned food the best.
As it is the most expensive dog food, it is not necessarily the best.
They may not be completely balanced, claim that they are "all meat", and meat alone is not enough to provide a dog a balanced, nutritious meal.
Kibbles, the dry dog food, is the most economical, and the major brands offer a complete balanced meal.
Pick a brand, that offers first in row : poultry, beef, not "poultry, or beef by-products".
Study the ingredients list very carefully every time you select something new to your dogs diet.
Kibbles also contribute to healthier teeth. The friction serves as a toothbrush and keeps gums and teeth in a better shape.
Homemade dog diets are most likely not balanced, your dog could end up with deficiencies.
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.....
What about taking Kibbles as a base staple, and every so often sprinkle some fresh hamburger, over it, along with peas, carrot snips, oats; as a treat? (Eliminate the burger, if you and your dog is a vegetarian !)
