First Snow 2009-10

Click on the image to see photos done in this afternoon's snow.
Of course there are some puppies who have never been in the snow yet.

The Papillon and Marie Antoinette.

Marie Antoinette was said to have walked to the guillotine clutching her small dog under her arm. Tradition has it that her dog was a small spaniel that had been brought to the French court from Spain on the back of pack mules. According to the story, her pup was spared and cared for in a building in Paris still called the Papillon House. Marie's small spaniel was said to have descended from a very old drop-eared breed known as the Epagneul Nain Continental, or Continental Dwarf/Toy Spaniel that appeared in church frescos and paintings as early as the 13th century.

Merry Christmas

I wish a Merry Christmas Season to all my Papillon Friends.

What makes Papillons a high maintence Pet?

Absolutely nothing.
Papillons do not need to go to get clipped and groomed by a groomer.  Their hair-coat is easy to maintain by brushing  a couple of times per week, with emphasis under/ around  ears, and hocks (hind legs).
Papillons adopt easily to a variety of life styles, learn well, are trained easy, but , like most dogs, or other house pets, cherish a regulated household, with regular routines.

Dangerous Food Items for your Papillon Dog

It’s only natural for dogs to be curious. But their curiosity can get them into trouble when they get into areas where you store household items such as medicine and detergents. Many common household items that you use everyday can be harmful, and sometimes even lethal, to your dog.

Foods that are harmful to your dog:
May cause vomiting, abdominal pain and/or diarrhea:
Wild cherry

Coffee grounds

Macadamia nuts

Tomato and potato leaves and stems

Avocados

Onions and onion powder

Grapes

Raisins

Chocolate

Pear and peach kernels

Mushrooms (if also toxic to humans)

Rhubarb

Spinach

Alcohol

Symptoms of possible poisoning are: vomiting, diarrhea, difficult breathing, abnormal urine (color,

aroma or odor, frequency, etc.), salivation, weakness. If your dog should ingest harmful chemicals,

contact a veterinarian or poison control center immediately.

Papillon Health /Vet Care

There will be times when you have to give your Papillon pills or capsules by mouth .
The best way to do that is by hiding the pill in a delicious meat ball, cheese, peanut butter, or even a little bit of canned cat food!!

If he is still figuring it out by spitting the pill back out, you may have to break the pill in tiny pieces; that will work.
If for some reason this does not work, insert the pill way back in his mouth, close it gently, and watch that he does lick his lips, which means, that he swallowed!!
If you have to give him any liquid, hold his muzzle closed without tilting his head back, squirt with a syringe the liquid into the pouch at the back of his jaw (between teeth and cheek). Make sure he swallows; if not, blow at his nose gently, or stroke his neck.

If small amounts of liquids are only prescribed, it is possible to put it in a small dish, mix with small amount to favored food to eat!!
yummy, yummy!!

Papillon Puppy Socializing

It is very important to socialize your Papillon puppy between 7-8 weeks and 4 months of his age.
It will shape his entire future/life. How he will react and deal with things as an adult dog.
Expose him to a great variety of things-in a gentle way-.
Take him car riding, go to places, expose him to a lots of people, animals, and other things.
Proper socialization can prevent him being fearful of children, car riding, and in general: other people.
Help him to develop to be a nice pleasant-mannered Papillon.

  • Epagneul Nain Continental
  • Butterfly Dog
  • Dwarf Spaniel
  • Squirrel dog or Squirrel Spaniel (due to its tail carriage)

Papillons and other Bigger Dogs.

Bigger Dogs can be a serious threat to Papillons.

Some of the bigger dogs are bred for hunting for instance, and see the Papillons as prey; a rabbit for example.

But also a sweet, laid back larger dog is not a good playmate for Papillons. It can take only their paw landing on their back, while interacting, to break, or injure the Papillons delicate spinal cord.

If you have a bigger dog at home, introduce your Papillon very carefully, with great observation, as far as dominance establishment, feeding time, favored resting spots, toys.

It is best not to leave your Papillon together with a bigger dog alone, when everyone is gone.
